Questionnaire

In His Own Words . . .

Mr. Hildreth returned his Citizens for Belknap Questionnaire with these responses:

1. I am running because of my concerns in several areas. As a long-term independent voter, I am running in a write-in campaign for the New Hampshire House in Belknap 5 as I could not register for the Democratic ticket.  I am concerned by the attack on our already underfunded public school system through the voucher system. Every child should have the right to a quality education and it’s important to continue our commitment to youth. I want to address the lack of affordable housing in the Lakes Region and the state. This issue affects the ability of local small businesses to attract employees
in a state where we depend on tourism and adds to the growing homeless Population.

2. I am thrilled with the progress of Tom Day and his team at Gunstock and the long-term strides they have made for our beloved mountain. I am completely behind past and future efforts to maintain and improve this Belknap County gem.

3. At the depth of the issues brought on by the previous Delegation, I noticed that the cuts made were detrimental to the fiscal health of the Belknap County Nursing Home as they were nowhere near capacity while many of our citizenswere in need of nursing care.

4. As a member of the Belknap County Delegation, I would bring my experience as a business owner and executive to ensure that we are competitive in the labor pool to attract the best individuals needed to be effective in our County.

5. My experience working with the New Hampshire Liquor Commission, as well as other liquor control boards, I have a unique perspective of state-run agencies. I know these entities can be very effective while providing a specialized product that cannot be matched by private companies. There is also a control element
and responsibility to the taxpayers that I believe is important to consider. With Gunstock, I don’t believe that any other entity could provide a product anything like what we have in our county-owned asset.

6. The 220 acre former State School must be approached with the city of Laconia and its residents’ best interests in mind. The state has really shown little in this matter except their desire to get it off state books. I will be a voice for Laconia to be sure that our best interests are considered.

7. I have not yet looked at facilities/programs to analyze where we are and what we need to stop the opioid problems we have, but it is clear that the problem is widespread. I would be open to support those programs that can stem the flow of opioids to our state and to provide help to those affected through existing and future programs.

8. The most important skill for being a good State representative is first to listen to my constituents, keep and open mind, and study all aspects of an issue.

9. The Belknap County Delegation of a few years ago was on a self-destructive path. In the last election the voters, urged by groups like Citizens for Belknap, corrected some of these problems by voting out those with ulterior motives, We need to maintain our momentum and ensure that we do not revert to electing those that would jeopardize our progress. Belknap County enjoys the benefits from our geographic location in the Lakes Region. We must maintain measured
growth and be stewards for our environment and the all-important quality of our Lakes.

10. At this point, none of my funding is from outside Belknap County.

11. Until I have experience with the legislature and delegation, I would reserve any opinion regarding a change in size of our current county government.

12. As a native and mostly lifetime resident of the Lakes Region, I have a vested interest in our county. Having lived in the community while working and traveling, both for work and leisure, to many parts of the country and the world, I have recognized the unique quality of our small part of the world. I aim to always protect it.

13. I have only received the endorsement of the local Democratic party at this time, just a few weeks into my campaign.

14. I am a lifelong resident of Belknap County.
